Dr. Richard Jackson MD MPH, investigates the link between our nation’s obesity and Type 2 Diabetes epidemic with urban sprawl fueled by car dependency. To prevent disease through better urban planning, Boulder, CO redesigns the city to make bicycles a safe alternative transportation. Two Denver suburbs transform dead malls into mixed use and public transit-centered communities. An abandoned mall in Georgia gains new life as a K-8th grade charter school. And two former grad students from Georgia Tech, mentored by their professor, create visionary projects that are forever changing the face of Atlanta.

This is an absolutely wonderful documentary of what inspired human beings can accomplish. These great people have created the template for which future urban areas will hopefully emulate. The models depicted have so many advantageous qualities to the general well being of the community as a whole, and to the individuals living in it. I hope this is the direction our country is headed in, and that many cities will take notice and replicate it.

Great job of outlining the health issues from our automobile dependence and showing us some solutions. Now that Wall Street banks are no longer funding those solutions, we need new finance solutions. Maybe the seemingly still thriving health care industry will need to find ways to finance development solutions–and put some of us urban planners, urban designers, architects and engineers back to work. Our unemployment rate in some parts of the country is around 45%!

Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon has legislation forwarding scenario planning that would help more communities make changes like Atlanta, Denver and other communities featured in the film did. Tell your Senator to support SCENARIO PLANNING in the next federal Transportation Bill.

I think it’s fantastic that someone has a fresh angle on helping with our national obesity problem, while improving our overall quality of life through intelligent urban design. Fascinating material… I hope it catches on quickly.

    Great job Dr. Jackson!
You are not 100-year-old fashioned. I am a young spirit, and your dream happens to be the same as mine ^_^
Best wishes to our walkable cities and healthy communities :)

I think the professor at Georgia Tech deserves so much more recognition – perhaps a Presidential citation. Her inspiration of two visionary students is literally changing the lives of millions of citizens of Atlanta and having an impact on the environment. As a high school counselor, this is the type of educator I hope and pray my students will encounter at college. Hooray for the educators of today who inspire the dreamers that change tomorrow!
